Selenite derives its name from the Greek "Selenite" for moonstone and from the ancient Goddess Selene. Moonstone, however, is feldspar and is a different mineral. Gypsum is used in plaster of Paris, cement and as fertilizer or a pottery flux, but Selenite is prized mostly as beautiful mineral specimens for collectors and in decor to bring a touch of nature's fascinating crystal forms into the home.
Gypsum is a relatively common mineral, and may be found throughout the world.  Granular, massive gypsum is known as alabaster. Selenite is the clear crystal variety that is less common. It is formed as a sedimentary mineral that remains after seas or saline waters evaporate, sometimes at hot volcanic springs. Large selenite sheets are found in Utah. Selenite blades are found in Mexico, the most well-known location being the "Cave of Swords."  There are many collecting areas for Selenite in the U.S. and around the world, particularly Italy, Madagascar, Morocco and Mexico. The most spectacular growth of Selenite crystals ever found is in Mexico's Naica Mountains, about fifty miles southeast of Chihuahua City.
NOTE: You may rinse selenite with water, but if submerged for an extended period, it will degrade.
Mental clarity, insight, awareness.  In meditation, can be used as a tool to aid in accessing past and future lives, by gently rubbing the stone.  As it seems to glow with a pure inner white light, Selenite helps the mind focus to enter a higher consciousness. Useful for scrying or gazing, similar to clear quartz. May be used as an "auric comb" to remove entities and negative thoughts attached or tangled in the aura. May also be used along the spine, from the base to the back of one's head to help remove blockages and restore proper energy flow. Beneficial also to the skeletal system, and to muscular or cellular structure.
