Corresponding Astrological Sign: Sagittarius
Obsidian occurs in volcanic lava flows, from silica-rich magma that has come to the surface. Shiny black or microcrystals within the rock may reflect rainbow colors or a gold or silver sheen. Mahogany Obsidian is a mottled brown and black. Snowflake Obsidian is black with white crystallite clusters. Lapidaries value all forms of the mineral. Obsidian was highly valued by the Aztec and Mayan peoples. The Mayans had developed a great trade in this material. It was used for ceremonial purposes, for tools and projectile points and for psychic protection or for gazing.
Metaphysical: Excellent for grounding and protection, but not for use by the timid. Obsidian is a mirror into the shadow side of self. It is to be used with complete honesty and integrity, as negative aspects reveal themselves and are worked on for integration and wholeness. Absorbs then deflects negativity. Gold or silver sheen obsidian spheres are seer stones, useful for scrying.
